This Halloween my sisters and I dressed up as some of our
favorite characters.
I was Harry.
And Anissa was Ron.
Our costumes were actually fairly simple, though we did have
to obtain some wigs. (Harry & Hermione wigs came from Amazon, and Ron’s was
borrowed from a friend.)
We wore our college graduation robes over simple clothes we
already had. (Knew those robes would come in handy someday!)
Wands (that actually light up and have sound effects) and ties
(go Gryffindor!) and Harry’s glasses (that are NOT my prescription – why couldn’t
Hermione have Reparoed them?) came from Party City.
Harry’s Nimbus 2000 (actually it looked more like a pitiful
Cleansweep) was a cinnamon broom from the grocery store.
Ron’s pumpkin juice was a souvenir from the Wizarding World of
Harry Potter at Universal Studios.
And Hermione’s “Hogwarts: A History” book came straight off
our shelves at home.
The photoshoot was so fun, and it helped us get in the
character for the evening. (Yes, we walked around with British accents having in-character conversations throughout the neighborhood.)
…though things did get a little silly toward the end!
We went trick-or-treating for the first time in 10+ years,
just around our neighborhood.
These were our “cauldrons” that we would fill with candy.
We got lots of “Oh, they’re from Harry Potter!” but also
several true fans who quizzed us on trivia.
One man who passed us on the street muttered, “Wit beyond
measure is man’s greatest treasure.” When I responded with, “Pssh – Ravenclaw!”
he burst out laughing.
I serenaded one couple with the entire "Harry Potter in 99 seconds" song. It was awesome.
The one night of the year when it’s not creepy to gallivant
through the neighborhood and actually meet your neighbors, when they actually
open the door expectantly and pass out candy with a smile, was a wonderful joy-spreading
event.
And as you can see, we got quite a bit more candy than we had
imagined we would! (Ron’s handle broke, and Hermione teased him mercilessly.)
